Understanding the New Priority Service for British Citizenship Applications
Updated: Oct 16
What is the New Priority Service?
Applicants can now choose a Priority Service when submitting an eligible British citizenship application by paying an additional fee of £500. The Home Office states that applications submitted using this service should normally receive a decision within 30 working days from the date the applicant attends their biometric appointment.
How Much Does the Priority Service Cost?
The Priority Service fee is:
£500 (in addition to the standard Home Office citizenship application fee).
The priority fee only covers faster processing of the application and is separate from the application fee itself.
Who Can Use the Service?
The Priority Service is available for eligible British citizenship (nationality) applications. Applicants selecting this option at the time of application should normally receive a faster decision than those applying through the standard service.
How Long Does It Take?
The Home Office advises that applicants should normally expect a decision within 30 working days from the date biometrics are enrolled. However, this is not a guaranteed service standard. Some applications may take longer where additional enquiries are required.
Can an Existing Application Be Upgraded?
No. If you have already submitted your citizenship application using the standard service, you cannot later upgrade it to the Priority Service. The Priority Service must be selected when making the application.
When Might an Application Take Longer?
Even if you pay the additional £500 Priority Service fee, your application may not be decided within 30 working days if it requires:
enhanced scrutiny;
external verification checks;
national security enquiries;
identity investigations; or
consideration of particularly complex legal or factual issues.
Where additional investigations are necessary, the Home Office may require more time before making a decision.
Is the Priority Service Worth It?
For many applicants, paying an additional £500 may be worthwhile where there is a genuine need for a quicker decision, such as:
planned international travel;
employment requiring British citizenship;
obtaining a British passport urgently;
family or personal commitments;
avoiding lengthy waiting periods under the standard service.
Applicants should remember that the Priority Service speeds up the decision-making process but does not increase the likelihood of approval. Every application must still satisfy the legal requirements for British citizenship.
Standard Processing Time
The Home Office continues to state that most standard citizenship applications are decided within six months, although some cases may take longer depending on their complexity. Applicants who require a quicker decision may now choose the Priority Service where available.

Frequently Asked Questions About the British Citizenship Priority Service
1. What is the new British citizenship Priority Service?
Answer: The British citizenship Priority Service is a new Home Office service that allows eligible applicants to request faster processing of their nationality application. The additional Priority Service fee is £500, paid on top of the standard British citizenship application fee. The Home Office states that applicants using the service should normally receive a decision within 30 working days from the date their biometrics are submitted.
2. How much does the British citizenship Priority Service cost?
Answer: The Priority Service costs an additional £500 on top of the standard British citizenship application fee. The £500 payment is specifically for faster processing and does not replace the normal citizenship application fee.
3. How long does the British citizenship Priority Service take?
Answer: The Home Office says applicants using the Priority Service should normally receive a decision within 30 working days from the date of biometric submission. However, 30 working days is not a guaranteed decision deadline. Applications that require additional checks or further investigation may take longer.
4. When did the British citizenship Priority Service start?
Answer: The new Priority Service became available for eligible British citizenship applications made from within the UK from 20 July 2026. The Home Office updated its nationality guidance in July 2026 to reflect the introduction of the service.
5. Can I upgrade my British citizenship application to Priority Service after submitting it?
Answer: No. A British citizenship application submitted through the standard service cannot be upgraded later to the Priority Service. If you want to use the Priority Service, you must select it when submitting your application.
6. Does the Priority Service guarantee approval of British citizenship?
Answer: No. Paying for the Priority Service does not guarantee that your British citizenship application will be approved. It only provides faster consideration of the application. You must still meet all applicable British citizenship requirements, and the Home Office will assess your application in the normal way.
7. Can my British citizenship application take longer than 30 working days even if I use Priority Service?
Answer: Yes. The Home Office may take longer than 30 working days where an application requires additional investigation or checks. This can include enhanced scrutiny, external verification, national security or identity checks, or cases involving particularly complex legal or factual issues.
8. What is the normal processing time for a British citizenship application?
Answer: The standard Home Office service level for British citizenship applications is generally six months, although some applications may take longer. The Priority Service provides an option for eligible applicants who need a faster decision, with the Home Office normally aiming to decide the case within 30 working days after biometrics are submitted.
9. Is the British citizenship Priority Service available for all citizenship applications?
Answer: The Priority Service is available for eligible British nationality applications, but applicants should check whether the service is available for their particular application before selecting it. Eligibility for British citizenship itself still depends on the relevant nationality rules and requirements. The availability of priority processing does not change the legal requirements for becoming a British citizen.
10. Can Waltham Law Chambers help with a British citizenship Priority Service application?
Answer: Yes. Waltham Law Chambers can assist with British citizenship applications, including naturalisation and registration matters, eligibility assessments, residence and absence requirements, good character considerations, document preparation and submission. Legal advice can also help applicants understand whether the Priority Service is suitable for their circumstances and ensure that the application is properly prepared before submission.
