How to Get a Business Sponsor Licence in East London

6 days ago
4 min read

To get a sponsor licence, an East London business must show it is a genuine, lawfully operating UK organisation, appoint suitable key personnel, apply online to the Home Office, pay the licence fee and send the supporting documents it is asked for. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) then assesses the application and may visit the business before deciding. Waltham Law Chambers, an IAA-regulated immigration adviser in Leyton, East London, assists businesses with straightforward sponsor licence applications.

Who needs a sponsor licence?

A UK business needs a sponsor licence before it can employ most overseas workers on routes such as the Skilled Worker visa. The employer holds the licence, not the worker. Once the licence is granted, the business can assign a Certificate of Sponsorship to each eligible worker, who then makes their own visa application. The rules are the same for a shop in Leyton, a care provider in Walthamstow or a technology company in Stratford: there is no separate local process for East London.

Step 1: check your business is eligible

Before applying, make sure your business can meet the Home Office's basic tests. GOV.UK explains that:

  • neither the business nor its key people should have unspent convictions for immigration offences or certain other crimes, such as fraud or money laundering;

  • the business needs HR systems to monitor sponsored workers and manage its sponsorship duties;

  • a business that had a licence revoked in the last 12 months, or applied unsuccessfully in the last 6 months, will usually have to wait before applying again.

You should also check that each role you want to fill is suitable for sponsorship, including its skill level and salary. Our free sponsor licence checker gives a quick first view.

Step 2: appoint your key personnel

Every application names the people who will manage sponsorship. One person can hold more than one role.

  • Authorising Officer: a senior, competent member of staff or office holder, based in the UK most of the time, who is responsible for how the licence is used.

  • Key Contact: the main point of contact with UKVI.

  • Level 1 User: manages the licence day to day through the Sponsorship Management System. At least one Level 1 User must be an employee, partner, director or settled worker.

Key personnel must pass suitability checks and cannot be contractors or consultants brought in for a specific project. Choose people who will be available to keep records up to date after the licence is granted.

Step 3: prepare your supporting documents

The Home Office lists the documents it accepts in Appendix A of its sponsor guidance. The exact list depends on the type of organisation, but businesses are commonly asked for evidence such as:

  • proof that the business is registered and trading, for example VAT or PAYE registration with HMRC;

  • employer's liability insurance, where the law requires it;

  • a business bank account statement;

  • evidence of business premises, such as a lease or rental agreement.

Documents must be in PDF, JPEG or PNG format and clearly legible. Anything not in English or Welsh needs a certified translation. Check Appendix A on GOV.UK for the current list before you apply.

Step 4: apply online and pay the fee

You apply online through GOV.UK. After submitting the form, you email the submission sheet and your supporting documents to the address shown on the sheet. At the time of writing, GOV.UK lists the Worker licence fee as £611 for small or charitable sponsors and £1,682 for medium or large sponsors. Fees change, so check GOV.UK for the latest figures.

How long does it take?

GOV.UK says most applications are decided in less than 8 weeks, and UKVI may visit your premises first. A priority service, costing an extra £750 for a decision within 10 working days, is offered to a limited number of applications each working day. Our guide How long does a sponsor licence application take in 2026? explains the timeline in more detail.

After the licence is granted

A successful business receives a licence rating and can start assigning Certificates of Sponsorship. From then on it must meet its sponsor duties, including right to work checks, keeping records and reporting certain changes to the Home Office. Our right to work checker and free sponsor compliance health check can help you stay organised.
