How Long Does a Sponsor Licence Application Take in 2026?

1 min read

If your business needs to sponsor workers from overseas, timing matters. Here is what to expect from a sponsor licence application in 2026.

Standard processing

Most sponsor licence applications are decided within eight weeks of the Home Office receiving the online application and supporting documents.

The priority service

For an additional fee, eligible applicants can request a decision within ten working days. Places are limited each day and allocated on a first come, first served basis. The service is not available for every licence type. Check the current fee and eligibility on GOV.UK before relying on it.

What causes delays

  • Missing or incorrect supporting documents

  • Unclear information about the roles you intend to sponsor

  • A compliance visit before a decision is made

  • Problems with key personnel, such as unspent convictions

Planning your timeline

  • Gather your supporting documents before applying

  • Appoint suitable key personnel and check their eligibility

  • Make sure your HR systems can meet sponsor duties

  • Allow time after approval to assign Certificates of Sponsorship and for workers to apply for visas
