What is Sponsor Licence Management and Compliance?
The routine requirement to renew a sponsor licence every four years was removed on 6 April 2024. Most licences now remain valid unless surrendered or revoked. Different time limits apply to the UK Expansion Worker and Scale-up routes, which generally have a maximum licence duration of four years.
The Home Office uses the renewal process to re-evaluate your business, checking that you are still a genuine, lawfully operating employer with the HR systems and compliance records to meet your ongoing sponsor duties. Any gaps, missed reporting obligations or compliance failures during your licence period will come under scrutiny at this stage.
If your licence lapses, even by a single day, you will immediately lose the legal right to employ your sponsored workers. They will lose their immigration status, and your business will be forced to cease their employment. Reapplying from scratch means starting the full application process again, with an 8 to 12 week wait and no guarantee of approval.
