Marriage Visitor Visa
The Marriage Visitor Visa is a specialist route for couples who want to marry or register a civil partnership in the UK but have no intention of living here afterwards. It's a common point of confusion: a Standard Visitor Visa cannot be used to marry in the UK. We help couples choose the right route from the outset and prepare an application that withstands close Home Office scrutiny.
We assist with straightforward Marriage Visitor applications for eligible people who intend to marry or enter into a civil partnership in the UK and then leave.
Who This Visa Is For
You may qualify for this visa category if you are:
Couples planning to marry or register a civil partnership in the UK, where at least one partner is not a British citizen, Irish citizen, or holder of UK settled/pre-settled status
Couples intending to return to their home country, or live elsewhere, after the ceremony
EEA and Swiss nationals without settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (exempt before 2021, but required to apply since)
Anyone wanting to give formal notice of marriage or civil partnership at a UK register office
This is not the right route if you intend to settle in the UK with your partner after marrying — that requires a Fiancé Visa (before the wedding) or a Spouse Visa (if already married), not a Marriage Visitor Visa.
After the Wedding: What Happens Next
The Marriage Visitor Visa does not lead to settlement and generally cannot be switched into a Spouse Visa from inside the UK. If you marry in the UK and later decide you want to live together here, the non-UK partner will normally need to leave and apply for a Spouse Visa from outside the UK, meeting the full financial, relationship and English language requirements for that route — including the sponsor's minimum income threshold. We regularly advise couples on this next step as part of their wedding planning, so there are no surprises afterwards.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, you must:
-
Be aged 18 or over
-
Be free to marry or enter a civil partnership, with any previous marriages or civil partnerships legally ended
-
Be in a genuine relationship — the Home Office scrutinises this closely to rule out sham marriages
-
Intend to marry or register a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of arrival
-
Intend to leave the UK at the end of your stay, and not make the UK your main home through frequent or successive visits
-
Be able to support yourself financially during your stay, or have someone else able to support you, without accessing public funds
-
Have the means to pay for your return or onward travel
-
Provide evidence of your wedding arrangements — for example a venue booking confirmation or payment receipt

Where a Marriage Visitor visa is required, it should be obtained before travelling to give notice or marry in the UK. The applicant must meet the route’s requirements, including the intention to leave at the end of the visit. The registrar’s notice and ceremony requirements must also be met.
