UK Student Visa

Waltham Law Chambers assists with straightforward Student visa applications for eligible applicants with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed student sponsor.

UK Student Visa

The Student Visa allows international applicants aged 16 or over to study full-time in the UK at an institution holding a valid student sponsor licence. It operates on a points-based system, and while the process is entirely online, the financial evidence and documentation requirements are strict — the most common reason for refusal is a technical failure on the 28-day funds rule rather than a genuine lack of eligibility. We help students and their families get the application right the first time.

Who This Visa Is For

You may qualify for this visa category if you are:

International students with an offer from a UK university, college or other licensed sponsor

Applicants moving from another visa category who wish to switch into study

Postgraduate and PhD candidates, including those wishing to bring a partner or children

Parents or sponsors supporting a student's application with proof of funds

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you must score 70 points by meeting all of the following:

  • A valid CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from a licensed sponsor, confirming your course, fees and any conditions attached to your offer

  • The financial requirement — evidence of funds to cover any outstanding tuition fees plus living costs, held continuously for at least 28 days, ending no more than 31 days before you apply

  • English language proficiency, generally at CEFR B2 for degree-level study (B1 may apply for some below-degree courses), demonstrated through an approved Secure English Language Test unless you're exempt

  • You must apply within 6 months of your CAS being issued

  • Applicants for certain STEM and research-based courses may also need an ATAS certificate before their CAS can be issued

  • A TB certificate may be required if you're applying from a listed high-risk country

  • We review the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, identity documents and evidence relevant to the applicable financial and English language requirements. Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance, tuberculosis testing and other documents may be required depending on the course and the applicant’s circumstances.

Financial Requirement at a Glance

Living costs are calculated per month of your course, up to a maximum of 9 months:

  • Studying in London: a set monthly amount for living costs

  • Studying outside London: a lower monthly amount for living costs

These figures are reviewed periodically by the Home Office, so we always confirm the current thresholds against your specific CAS before advising on the total you need to evidence. On top of this, you'll pay the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (charged at the discounted student rate, for the full length of your visa, upfront).

Bringing Dependants

Since January 2024, only the following students can bring a partner or children under 18:

  • PhD or other doctoral-level students

  • Students on research-based higher degrees (e.g. MRes, MSc by Research)

  • Students on government-sponsored courses lasting more than 6 months

Undergraduate and taught postgraduate (Master's) students are not currently able to bring new dependants.
